The Nevada City Council appears to have shattered the council's informal record for the shortest meeting during a special meeting Monday night.

It took the council 12 minutes to complete the very short agenda and hear some public comments. The benchmark meeting dates to several years ago when Mary Ireland was on the council and running for the state legislature. She happened to have a campaign event scheduled in Lamar for 8 p.m. on a council night. That council meeting lasted a little less than 30 minutes and she made it to the event in Lamar. In those days, each new ordinance had to be read in its entirety, which could take up a lot time, unlike today when they only need to read the title of each ordinance.

Monday night the council voted 4-0, with James McKenzie excused, to accept the low bid of $135,131 from Sproul's Construction, Lamar to construct an ADA compliant sidewalk between the Nevada High School and the downtown area.. Council member Jayne Novak, remembering difficulties with Sproul's during the construction of the terminal building at the airport, asked about the supervision of the project to be sure it came in on schedule.

City Manager JD Kehrman said the city's engineering firm would be overseeing the project and that could be further addressed in the contract for the project that the council will have to approve in the future.

The council also voted 4-0 to give final approval to a contract for $152,265 with Lochner, Inc., Kansas City, for engineering services involved with replacing the airplane parking pad and apron at the Nevada Municipal Airport. Ninety five percent of the cost of this project comes from federal and state grants and 5 percent city money.
