Core Topography, an exhibit from artist Safiya Carter-Thompson, is on display in the Cottey College P.E.O. Foundation Art Gallery through Sept.15.

Safiya Carter-Thompson was born and reared in Oakland, Calif.. She obtained her BFA at the Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. After graduating college in 2008, she attended the University of Kansas, where she studied textile arts as a graduate student. In 2011 she graduated with a Master of Fine Art degree. She currently resides in San Leandro, Calif.

Large, panoramic images line the walls of the gallery, featuring a bright mix of colors, lines and geometric shapes.

According to Carter-Thompson's artist's statement, the principle sentiment driving Carter-Thompson's work originates from fond memories of growing up in California's dichotomous landscape. The resulting imagery is a meditation of how the landscape shaped her and is a tribute to the Bay Area landmarks and family that were imprinted on her. All elements and symbols combine to create visual landscapes. Her intention is to create stimulating areas of exploration, and enigmatic maps that trace back to childhood and adulthood memories of home.

Several people already have visited the gallery, leaving comments as they left in a guest book.

Local artist Dodi Chew wrote, "Beautiful work!"

Camryn Womack "loved the combination of paint and stitch," referring to the composition of works in the exhibit.

Others found the works "amazing," or praised the artist's use of color.

The gallery is located inside the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts on the northeast corner of Austin and Tower streets in Nevada. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and later on the evenings of performances.
