Fort Scott football rolls over Parsons, 65-7

FORT SCOTT -- Fort Scott High School's offense produced 404 total yards in a 65-7 rout of Southeast Kansas League rival Parsons in both teams' season opener at Frary Field Friday night.
Fort Scott senior Marques Floyd scored on a 71-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and finished with 138 yards on just five carries with two additional first-half scores.
Junior varsity Tigers started trickling in the game in the second quarter. Sophomores dominated the lineup in the fourth.
"We came out tonight and executed very well," Fort Scott head coach Bob Campbell said. "We came out and did a lot of good things for a first game. There are things we can improve on. But overall, I thought the effort for out first game was very good." Floyd's first score, just 12 seconds into the game, was a simple counter play that Campbell said the Tigers ran because they just wanted to see how Parsons would play it.
"That's a great way to start, a credit to the offensive line," Fort Scott head coach Bob Campbell said. "Marques is a back who's going to be hard to tackle in the open field. It was a great run on his part and a great job of blocking."
Blocking was also the name of the game on special teams. The Tigers blocked three consecutive Viking punts, all three of which led to Fort Scott scores.
Jash Pytlowany blocked the first one and recovered it himself. Fort Scott took over at the Parsons 17 and scored two plays later on Johnathan Stark's quarterback keeper with 8:58 to go. Stark threw to Pytlowany for the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.
Jacob Durossette recovered a Parsons fumble to set Fort Scott up at its own 48. Two plays later, Floyd scored his second touchdown on a 47-yard draw play. The extra-point kick failed and it was 20-0 with 7:52 on the clock.
Straton Hunziker had the Tigers' next punt block, also recovering it himself at the Parsons 16. Five plays later, Durossette ran up the middle for a four-yard score and Johnathan Allen's PAT kick made it 27-0 with 3:08 to go in the first quarter.
Senior John Metcalf blocked the next Parsons punt. He, too, recovered it himself at the Parsons 30. Four plays later, on fourth-and-14 at the 34, Stark found Hunziker wide open for a touchdown with 10:12 left in the second quarter. The PAT kick made it 34-0.
John Hughes ended Parsons' next drive by intercepting a Craig Beachner pass at the Parsons 36 and bringing it back nine yards. Three plays after that, Floyd found another long run thanks to his blockers, a 20-yard scorning play to make it 40-0 with 7:29 left in the half. The PAT was blocked.
Parsons' next drive ended with a 26-yard punt, setting the Tigers up at the Parsons 36. Stark found tight end Chris Davenport for a 24-yard score two plays later, making it 46-0 with 6:13 on the clock.
A.J. Cezar recovered a Viking fumbled snap at the Parsons 20 to set up the final score of the half, a Chase Brown four-yard run with 49 seconds left. The kick was good to make it 53-0.
Parsons scored on its first play of the second half, a 44-yard pass from Beachner to Isaiah Taylor 19 seconds into the half.
Brown scored another touchdown on a 14-yard run with 7:07 left in the third, which made it 59-7. Sophomore running back Issac Thurston scored on a 34-yard dash on the first play of the fourth quarter with Allen's PAT kick successful.
Since 1996, Fort Scott is 31-0 when gaining 400 or more total yards and 26-0 when rushing for 300 or more. The Tigers finished with 346 rushing yards on 43 carries. Joe Doherty was the second-leading rusher with 46 yards on seven rushes.
Parsons finished with just 96 total yards. At halftime, the Vikings had just 17 total yards on 21 plays.
Fort Scott travels to Columbus next week for a game between former Southeast Kansas League rivals. The Titans dropped their first game as a member of the CNC to Southeast-Cherokee Thursday night, 34-22.
