Updated: Incumbents hold on to statewide seats

Wednesday, November 7, 2012

from staff and wire reports

With only a few precincts still not reporting, just before midnight, Tuesday, several incumbents were holding onto their statewide seats.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, a Democrat, won re-election over St. Louis Republican challenger David Spence; but Spence took a narrow lead in Vernon County, with 4,423 votes to Nixon's 3,758, in a job-themed campaign in which the candidates positions were vastly different.

Clint Zweifel, also a Democrat, won re-election to the office of Missouri State Treasurer; also against the grain of Vernon County's voters, who favored Republican Cole McNary over Zweifel, 4,809 to 2.913.

Peter Kinder, a Cape Girardeau Republican, won re-election as lieutenant governor.

Republican Shane Schoeller commanded a strong lead in the race for secretary of state.

Attorney General Chris Koster held 54 percent of the vote with 3,002 of 3,380 precincts reporting; and Koster's increased somewhat a few moments later, as more results were reported by the Missouri Secretary of State's Office. Koster also was favored by Vernon County voters.

No further information was available at press time, Tuesday.

Late night results included heavily populated precincts in the St. Louis area; and the scales tipped in favor of Jason Kander in the Secretary of State's race. z
