DREXEL -- Playing the same team twice can be a challenge, particularly when the two teams met earlier in the season. Bronaugh and Hume's boys squared off on Feb. 15, with the Wildcats coming out on top, 80-42.

Monday night, in the first round of the district tournament, Bronaugh again prevailed. This time, by a final score of 85-47.

Hume put together double-digit scoring in each quarter of the district contest, yet Bronaugh did even better, exploding for 31 points in the first quarter for a 31-12 lead. The Wildcats then added 28 more in the second for a 59-25 halftime difference.

The third and fourth quarters were more even, but the Hornets were unable to make up ground and the margin was 75-36 with 8 minutes left.

Chance Wait and Josh Willis paced Bronaugh with 16 points each. Blake Hudson added 13 and Patrick Hallam 12. Also scoring for the Wildcats were Justin Hudson with nine, Thomas Kerbs with six, Cole Diggins and Bryce Whitworth with five, and Parker Norman with three.

Zach Smith paced Hume with 19. Cain Crawford added 11, Rhett Spencer 10, and Jeremy Lewis seven.

"Riley Patton didn't play the first half because of a medical issue," noted Hume coach David Brooks. "That didn't help us out.

"I never felt like we got into a good flow.

"Bronaugh speeded up the game on us with their press and we never settled down.

"I did think Cain Crawford had his best game of the year, both offensively and defensively."

In the Friday game prior, Brooks noted there were similarities, but also differences. "Offensively, we looked good the first half," noted Brooks. "Several shots looked like they would drop and didn't. It felt a lot closer than the score showed.

"Bronaugh made some adjustments defensively in the second half that stopped us. And Hallam was just too quick for us offensively."

Bronaugh will advance to play the winner of the Appleton City-Miami game, which was due to be played Tuesday night.

Drexel, a winner over NEVC in the other half of the bracket, will play the winner of Tuesday night's game between Montrose and Ballard.

Those games are set for today, at 5:45 and 8:15 p.m.
