Wednesday, April 24, 2013

Marion Thomas "Tom" Moore, 73, of Nevada, Mo., passed away following a lengthy illness on Monday, April 22, 2013, surrounded by his family. Tom was born Sept. 2, 1939, in Schell City, Mo., the son of Don and Augusta Moore.

Tom was a graduate of Metz High School, class of 1957. Following school, he was employed at the Nevada State Hospital for a few years. He worked on a ranch in Idaho for a couple of years and then returned to Nevada. He was a police officer for the city of Nevada for about three years and then joined Bunny Bread Baking Company where he stayed for 21 years. He froze his retirement and went back to the state hospital as a security guard for several years. When the State had the big lay off, he decided to start his own business and bought the Compton Junction Store and operated it for 10 years before he sold it and retired again.

Tom enjoyed traveling and had been in all 50 states as well as two foreign countries. He enjoyed just getting in the RV and heading out sometimes with no particular destination in mind. Tom always tried to plan at least one family trip each year while the children were growing up. He loved to meet new people and see different parts of the country.

He enjoyed the outdoors and until recent years, he liked to fish and hunt. Tom enjoyed fishing for all types of fish. His favorite fish to catch and eat was catfish. He had some memorable hunts with his two brothers-in-law that were outfitters and guides.

Family was very important to Tom. He enjoyed the dinners and get-togethers with family. Tom was always up to playing canasta or board games with the kids. At Christmas time, he would wear his Santa hat and call the numbers for the dirty bingo game. He looked forward to that each year.

In recent years, he was very involved with the Compton Junction Fire Department serving as president of the board for several years. Tom was one of the organizers and a past member of the Nevada Eagles Lodge. He served as their first president and as a past State Trustee. He was also a member of the Nevada Elks Lodge.

Tom is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda Moore; two sons, Dale Moore, Nevada, and Glen Moore and his wife, Jane, Raymore, Mo.; one daughter, Sandra Gilmore and her husband, Mark, Nevada; and two sisters, Margaret Pullin and her husband, George, Twin Falls, Idaho, and Donna Walker, Weiser, Idaho. Also surviving are his 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, on Saturday, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Bill Clevenger officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Family visitation will be held on Friday, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., and friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made in Tom's name to the Compton Junction Fire Department in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
