Area sports postponed

A number of Nevada High School sports teams, as well as the Cottey College Comets softball team, were scheduled to be in action Friday and Saturday, but thanks to rain that moved through the area Thursday night into Friday, those plans were once again forced to change.

In a rare turn of events, the Nevada High School track and field team's trip to Girard, Kan., was called off due to the weather. That meet was rescheduled for Monday.

The Nevada High School baseball team was scheduled to be back out on the road both Friday and Saturday, but both of those games were called off due to the wet conditions as well. Nevada High School assistant principal Chris Holcomb said via email Friday afternoon that no makeup date for either of those contests had been determined.

The Tigers freshman squad was scheduled to be on the road as well, taking on the Purple Dragons of Pittsburg High School. No makeup date for that contest had been decided as of Friday.

The Cottey College Comets softball team was scheduled to begin the Region XVI tournament at Vanek Family Memorial Field Friday, but those games had to be pushed back as well. Cottey College athletic director Dave Ketterman said Friday afternoon that the start of the tournament would be pushed back to Saturday, weather and field conditions permitting.

The Comets are scheduled to take on top-seeded East Central at 11 a.m., followed by a game between Mineral Area and St. Louis Community College at 1 p.m., but with rain in the forecast through the early portions of the day Saturday, those plans look as though they may be in jeopardy as well. If Saturday's games get rained out, there are plans in the works to possibly play through Monday to get the tournament finished.
