Sheriff's office goes on 24-hour patrols, 7 days a week

Beginning Tuesday, deputies in vehicles similar to the one belonging to Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher will be patrolling the county 24 hours a day, every day.

The Vernon County Sheriff's Department will have deputies patrolling the county 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Fulfilling a campaign promise, Sheriff Jason Mosher announced Monday the county will have 24/7 road coverage as of Tuesday. He said making the coverage happen has been one of his "biggest projects" since taking office Jan. 1.

"There were a lot of other obstacles that we had to work out first," Mosher said. "We had to get the court and bailiff duties working so we could stop pulling people off the road to help with court."

He also had to rearrange staffing so the county jail and patrol departments would work together better and pull less people away from their regular duties.

"We have used call statistics to decide how many deputies to place on each shift and made a mixture of eight- and 10-hour days, but there will always be someone on duty now," the sheriff said.

Besides answering calls for service, transporting prisoners, and serving papers, deputies from the patrol and jail departments are in the process of training a special weapons and tactics team who will respond and assist with all warrants served in the county.

The SWAT team also will respond to "critical incidents," Mosher said.

Protecting the citizens and their property is the sheriff's highest priority, he said, and this is a "big step" in making that happen.
