Sign up for library card in September -- get free prizes for the effort

September is National Library Card sign-up month.

The Nevada Public Library is taking part in the promotion, offering free prizes donated by local merchants to everyone who registers for a library card during the month.

September is recognized by the American Library Association as National Library card sign-up month.

Library Card Sign-up Month is a celebration held at the beginning of the new school year during which librarians across the country remind parents and caregivers that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

According to the website www.atyourlibrary.org, a library card is "a key resource in achieving academic success, and the library is the perfect place to spend quality family time together."

Nevada Public Library is recognizing this event by offering amnesty from lost book fees and an opportunity to have any existing fines waived.

During the remainder of the month of September, anyone who returns a book that was considered lost will have no charge.

"Our goal is simply to get the library books back into the library so that others may use them," said Library Director Jodi Polk.

"To assist our local food pantry, the library will also waive fines for those who donate a canned food item or non-perishable boxed item."

Each item donated will equal 50 cent fines.

"This is another opportunity for the library and our patrons to help our community," said Polk.

More information is available at the library or by calling 417-448-2770.
