Comets fall to North Central

TRENTON, Mo. -- The Cottey College Comets basketball team got back into action Tuesday night, hoping the get back on the winning track after a narrow defeat at the hands of Hesston College Saturday.

In Saturday's contest, the Comets held a 29-28 lead at halftime, but ultimately fell just short as Hesston rallied in the second half to take a 58-56 victory. Casey Heger led the offensive effort in that contest with 24 points and was joined in double figures by Lindsey Denney, who finished with 12.

That loss left the Comets with a lot of bad memories they entered Tuesday's contest hoping to erase. North Central Missouri's Lady Pirates had other ideas, however, as they edged the Comets by a final score of 70-67.

The Comets held a one-point lead at halftime in that contest, as well, despite an early 14-3 hole. That ultimately turned into a six-point edge late, before North Central went on a 7-0 run to take the win.

Three Lady Pirates scored in double figures, led by Kayla Oetterer with 19 points. Samone Redditt scored 17 and Nancy Berwanger chipped in 13.

Caley Shaffstall led the Comets with 20 points, while Heger scored 17 and Cassie Hale added 15.

With the loss, the Comets fell to 7-10 on the season, 1-2 against Region XVI opponents. The Lady Pirates are 7-1.

Head coach Dave Ketterman's squad is scheduled to get back into action Friday, hosting the Penn Valley Lady Scouts at 6 p.m., in the gym at the Hinkhouse Center.
