Thursday, January 30, 2014

CLINTON, Mo. --Senior Easton Mitchell scored a career-best 24 points to lead the fifth-seeded Nevada Tigers basketball team to an upset victory over fourth-seeded Holden, 65-49, Tuesday night, in the first round of the 86th annual Clinton Boys' Basketball Tournament.

Mitchell hit five 3-pointers and went 7-for-8 at the free throw line to help Nevada post its fifth win against nine losses this season. The Tigers led, 20-11, after the first quarter, by 11-- 37-26 -- at halftime and by as many as 20 points in the second half.

Brandon Barker added 15 points on five treys for the Tigers, while Tyler Schoonover led the Eagles with 17 points.

The Tigers are scheduled to be back in action in the tournament Thursday, when they challenge top-seeded Knob Noster, at 9 p.m., in the semifinals. The Panthers defeated Sherwood, 73-37, Tuesday.

In other games Tuesday night, Lebanon defeated El Dorado Springs, 91-60, and Versailles defeated the host Cardinals.

Lebanon and Versailles will meet at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, followed by the Nevada-Knob Noster game. The game times were flipped because of the short turnaround after Tuesday night and the distance the Yellowjackets must travel.
