Scammers target KCP&L customers
Kansas City Power and Light is encouraging utility customers to be wary of phone and email scams.
The electric provider notes in a press release that phone scammers have been calling customers and demanding immediate payment for accounts that are supposedly past due.
Additionally, emails containing fake utility bills have been sent to account holders. Falsified bills include fake account numbers, company information and website links. These emails direct customers to malicious websites.
These phone and email contacts are not associated with the electricity company.
KCP&L said that customers who have concerns about their account, bill or any contact made via phone or email should contact the customer care center directly at 888-471-5275. Customers who receive any suspicious calls should not provide account or personal information, and should instead contact the power company's customer service for additional information.
Power and Light also suggests that customers be suspicious of emails from the company if the utility account has not been setup for paperless communication. Customers who choose online bill pay should make payments directly through the KCP&L website.
Customers of KCP&L who feel they have been scammed should file a report with Nevada Police Department or Vernon County Sheriff's Department.
