Donald Victor Alt, age 83, passed away Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at the Barone Alzheimer Care Center, in Nevada. He was born June 1, 1930, in Plain, Wis., to Jonathan Andrew and Katherine (Decker) Alt. He was married to Bettie Lou (Griggs) and together the couple became parents of three children.

Don was raised in the Plain, Wis., area and attended school there. After his school years he entered the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his military commitment, Don moved to Nevada to work as an Army Recruiter. For many he also operated the grain elevator in Deerfield and farmed in the Vernon County area. His memberships included the American Legion Post in Plain, Wis., as well as being a lifetime member of Nevada Elks No. 564 and Knights of Columbus. He attended and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Don is survived by three children, Dennis Alt and Nancy, of Shawnee, Kan., David Alt and Susan, of Nevada, Iowa, and Laura Ramsey and Joel, of Fort Scott, Kan.; eight grandchildren, Nathan and Kelsey Alt, Joshua Ramsey, Denton Ramsey and Suzanne, Reed Ramsey, Dane Ramsey, Patrick Alt and Laura Alt; two great-grandchildren, Cooper and Thayer Alt; two sisters, Erna Crosby, of Sauk City, Wis., and Catherine Imberg, of Sun Prairie, Wis.; one brother, Alphonse Alt, of Spring Green, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 20, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Matthew Benjamin officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery in Fulton, Kan. Rosary will be spoken at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Ferry Funeral Home, with visitation to follow from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Contributions may be made in Mr. Alt's name to the Alzheimer's Association or the Vernon County Youth Fair in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
