Edwin E. Helton, 97, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Guest Home Estates. He was born March 11, 1916, in Yuma, Colo., the son of James E. and Minnie A. Foote Helton. He married Hettie Mae Beattie on Sept. 10, 1934, in Stratton, Colo. They were married for 73 years before she preceded him in death on Nov. 11, 2007. He worked most of his life farming and ranching in rural Fort Scott. He enjoyed baseball, fishing, trail riding, and hunting elk in Colorado.

Survivors include six sons, Donald Helton and wife, Patricia, Pueblo, Colo., Dean Helton and wife, Sue, Pueblo, Colo., Dennis Helton and wife, Ann, Fort Scott, Gary Helton and wife, Luella, Carl Junction, Mo., Darrell Helton and wife, Caroline, Nixa, Mo., and Dale Helton and wife, Alice, Fort Scott; two daughters, Margie Jones and husband, Thurman, Springfield, Ore., and Mary Sheperd and husband, Loyal, Carl Junction, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Glen, James, Ben, Howard, and Robert Helton; six sisters, Anna Bell, Belle Hensley, Bessie Flohr, Bernice Hill, Emma Campbell, and an infant girl Helton; a daughter-in-law, Pat L. Trout Helton; a son-in-law, Thurman Jones; and a grandson, Robert Helton.

The Rev. Donna Clark Fuller will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the West Liberty Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m until service time at the Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Hammond Community Building and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O. Box 347, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, KS 66701.
