Three Vernon County fire departments responded to a house fire Tuesday afternoon, just outside the Nevada city limits, on U.S. Highway 54.

Nevada, Deerfield and Milo fire departments responded to the home, across the street from 54 Seed and Feed, around 2 p.m. Firefighters were at the scene for nearly an hour and a half.

The house initially had smoke coming from the second floor windows and roof. At times, smoke caused visibility issues for highway drivers passing by the fire.

Vernon County Sheriff's Deputies and officers from the Nevada Police Department were dispatched to close one lane of westbound Highway 54 to traffic passing the home.

A fire on the second floor was later visible through upstairs windows.

Nevada Fire Captain Kevin Scott said the home sustained heavy damage to the second floor and kitchen, and moderate damage to the first floor. Water and smoke damage were prevalent throughout the house.

The home was occupied by renters, who were home at time of the fire but were unaware of fire. A neighbor notified emergency dispatchers that smoke was billowing from the home.

No injuries were sustained, and the cause of the fire has not been determined.
