James John Mashek

James John Mashek, 84, formerly of Richards, Mo., passed away on May 11, 2014, at Freeman Hospital, after an acute illness. He was born in Ulysses, Neb., on Jan. 22, 1930. As a child he was baptized during his time in the Catholic Church. He then went to school for 12 years in Stuart, Neb., where he met his wife, Bernelda Joan Custer. They were married on March 22, 1952.

They moved in 1953 to Richards, Mo., where they bought a farm and started their family. He was a lifelong farmer, cattle rancher, and loving husband, father, and grandfather. When he wasn't with his family or taking care of the farm he was either fishing or hunting.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James and Mary Mashek; wife, Bernelda Mashek; sister, Mary Ann Jarnig; son, Lee Mashek; and great-great grandson, Malachai James Mashek. James is survived by three children, Susan Mashek, of Nevada, Kim and Nancy Mashek, of Richards, Mo., and Jeanne and Ray Brewer, of Mount Vernon, Mo.; a brother, Emil and Carmen Mashek; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside services are at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 14, in Richland Cemetery, Richards, Mo., with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada.
