Hume Board of Education approved three contracts for next year -- Delanya Thompson as head cook, Tracy Reno as assistant cook and Diana Morrison as a classroom aide in kindergarten at its meeting Wednesday.

In other business, Superintendent David Quick told the board he is in contact with School Reach, a program to contact parents with schedule changes and school closings with only one phone call. The cost would be $1,500 for three years.

"The program would save a lot of time calling parents for various changes," he said. "We would be able to customize it to suit our needs."

In his report, assistant principal Scott Morrison told the board new volleyball equipment was being purchased to replace the old equipment. Summer projects are also underway with sealing shelves in the kitchen with varnish.

"$1.2 million of our $1.7 million budget will be spent on salaries and benefits for employees," Quick said. "We will be getting a 2 percent increase in the foundation formula, but we will construct the budget by the same revenues as received this year. Also, all three buses need repair."

In other business, the board approved a local compliance agreement to comply with the federal rules for federal programs, Policy No. 2710, an update on reporting student abuse and Policy No. 4321, an update on family and medical leave policy.

In his report, principal Kirk Hart told the board three students had been inducted into National Honor Society, Megan Sutcliffe, Emily Ward and Brhett Mumma.

"We had a faculty meeting with teachers looking at this past year and brainstorming with different ideas on what to do to improve and change," Hart added. "We will meet again with teachers in August with the focus point being test scores and goals to accomplish for the upcoming school year."
