Gary Lee Houston, 54, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Friday, May 30, 2014, at his home following his battle with cancer. He was born April 4, 1960, in Fort Scott, the son of Wayne J. Houston and Vivian Marie McDaniel Houston. He graduated from Fort Scott High School with the class of 1978.

Gary was a lifelong farmer. He also worked in the oil fields of Richards, Mo., and for John Deere of Fort Scott early in his career. He served 12 years as a Bourbon County Commissioner. He was a member of the Richards Masonic Unity Lodge No. 495. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and petting his cows when checking on them. He loved playing guitar with friends and family. He was a generous, loving person who will be greatly missed.

Survivors include a son, Steven Houston and wife, Jennifer, Fort Scott; three daughters, Michelle Wooldridge and husband, Jeff, Laura Tucker and husband, Seth, and Angela Timi, all of Fort Scott; best friend, Barbara Houston; a brother, Greg Houston and wife, Linda, Richards, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and two nieces.

The Revs. Kevin Moyers and Scott Moore will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 3, at the Community Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m., Monday, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to either Mercy Hospice, Care to Share, or Hope Lodge of Kansas City and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O. Box 347, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, KS 66701.
