Glyndal David Roberts, 92, of Dardanelle, Ark., passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014, in his home.

He was born July 18, 1921, in Dardanelle, the son of John and Macie Roberts. He married Violet Opa James of Dardanelle, Sept. 8, 1943. She preceded him in death Sept. 14, 2009, after 66 years of marriage.

Mr. Roberts was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Chief Petty Officer on the U.S.S. Bataan, an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific. After the war he returned to Dardanelle where he worked several years before finishing degrees at Arkansas Tech and the University of Arkansas in education.

After receiving his master's degree fromArkansas he was hired as superintendent of schools at Stella, Mo. That was the start of a 26-year career in education which saw him as superintendent of the Bronaugh, Salem, Seymour and Butler, Mo., school districts. He retired from the latter in 1982 after 13 years.

Upon retirement he and Violet returned to their hometown of Dardanelle. Both were very active in the Dardanelle United Methodist Church for many years. Mr. Roberts was a lay speaker and taught an adult Sunday school class into his 90s, before his health prevented him from continuing. In addition, he was a member of Bright Star Masonic Lodge No. 213 as well as a Rotarian.

Being raised in Dardanelle, Mr. Roberts was an avid outdoorsman. He loved fishing and hunting. He also was a devoted husband and family man, raising five children with his wife.

Surviving his passing are five children and their spouses, Luanne (daughter) and Bill Lofquist, Tucson, Ariz., John (son) and Sandy Roberts, Holden, Mo., Randy (son) and Donna Roberts, Minden,

La., Chris Roberts (son), Springfield, Mo., and Saline Roberts (daughter), Dardanelle; as

well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 10, at the First United Methodist Church, 100

North Second Street, in Dardanelle. Interment will follow at the New Hope Cemetery, Dardanelle, with

Dardanelle United Methodist Church's the Rev. Jim Benfer officiating.

Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service, Russellville, Ark.
