The Hume Board of Education approved spending of $14,190 more than is projected in revenues during the next school year at its budget hearing in June.

"If the 3 percent increase in the basic formula comes through, it would make up for the deficit spending," superintendent David Quick said. "There are staff members not taking insurance equivalent to $14,000, which would also make up the difference."

The board also approved a step increase in the district's salary schedule, making the base salary $25,000, and a 2 percent pay increase for the support staff.

The budget includes a part-time guidance counselor, part-time language arts teacher, two certified teachers as part-time principals, a part-time art teacher, an additional elementary teacher, a new reading series for the elementary school, new biology books for the high school and a parent notification system. While two aide positions were eliminated, a special education aide in kindergarten may be hired next year.

Quick reviewed 2013-'14 year end balances and said the budget closed out with $34,048 more revenue than expenditures.

"Salaries will continue to be the driving factor in this year's budget," he said in his budget letter. "About 80 percent of the district's budget is invested in salaries and benefits. We will continue to maintain a nine months preschool/day care for children 3 to 5 years old."

He said he expects a small increase in state revenue and a small decrease in federal revenue at this time.

"Transportation and Parents as Teachers will see a very slight increase in funding," he said. "Prop C and Classroom Trust Fund will fluctuate based on sales tax and gambling."

In other business, the board approved $3,500 to build a walkway for the library and $2,500 to refinish the high school bathroom floors.
