Herbert Eugene Perkey

Herbert Eugene Perkey, 82, of Nevada, Mo., passed away Monday, July 21, 2014, at his home. He was born March 4, 1932, in Nevada, to William Thurman and Lena May (Fillpott) Perkey. On Oct. 27, 1951, he was united in marriage to Marian Frances Agee and she survives of the home.

Herb was raised in the Flat Rock and Nevada areas and attended the Flat Rock School. After moving to Nevada, he worked for a time at the Kraft Cheese Plant, Missouri State Hospital and Missouri Public Service. Herb joined the Missouri National Guard in 1949 and was drafted into the United States Army in 1952. After basic training he was sent to Japan where he completed a course in medical aidman training. In April 1953, he was sent to Korea where he became a Tank Commander/Platoon Sergeant with the 64th Tank Battalion, until 1954. He remained in the Reserves until his Honorable Discharge in 1960.

After his military commitment he settled in Kansas City where he and the family spent the next 35 years. He worked for Allstar and Boydston Moving and Storage Companies and Maddox, White, and Henges Insulation Companies, retiring in 1986. Upon retirement he and Marian moved back to Nevada and have made this area their home since that time.

Herb was baptized at an early age in the Sac River. Locally, he was a member of the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, and Nevada VFW. In what spare time he had he enjoyed fishing, dancing, music, and loved life itself.

In addition to his wife, Marian, survivors include his son, David Perkey, of Nevada; three grandsons, Heath Perkey and his wife, Jennifer, of Great Lakes, Ill., David (D.J.) Perkey, of Belleview, Neb., and Matthew Strunk, of Springhill, Kan.; one granddaughter, Aubrey Rossmanith and her husband, Michael, of Jefferson, Iowa; two great-grandsons, Hayden and Zander; one great-granddaughter, Madelyn; and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harvey, Charles, Kelder, and William Perkey; seven sisters, Martha Perkey, Edith Schmidt, Wilma Moore, Bernice Laning, Melba Whittle, Bonnie Kimrey, and Donna Hardin; and his twin daughters, Carolyn Sue and Sharon Lee.

Funeral services for Herbert Eugene Perkey are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, July 26, at the Ferry Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m., just prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow at the Moore Cemetery in Nevada. Friends may call until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home.
