The world lost a kind and gentle man with the passing of Sam D. Pryor on Aug. 6, 2014, in the loving care of Kansas City Hospice House. He was 92. Born in Nevada, Mo., in 1922, Sam was the son of Helen Litson Pryor and Henry Warren Pryor and one of five siblings: brother, Warren, and his twin, Dorothy (Hickman); and sisters, Ruby (Spillman), and Annalise (Harpold).

A service of music with visitation and reception will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at Saint Andrew Christian Church, 13890 W. 127 St., Olathe, Kan.

Sam married Edith Evelyn (Hickerson) on Memorial Day 1942. They celebrated 62 wonderful anniversaries, until her death in March 2003. They had two daughters, Jane Elyse and Patricia Marlise Pryor, both of Kansas City.

Sam proudly served in the Army Air Corps in World War II, then returned to Nevada, where he co-owned the family grocery, along with friend Clarence Oberlin. In 1955, he and Evelyn and the girls moved to Kansas City. Sam worked for Justrite and Thriftway grocery chains for a number of years as meat department manager. He joined Associated Wholesale Grocers in 1962, and served as meat merchandiser in Springfield for 20 years.

Sam Pryor was loved and respected by all who knew him. His faith was at the core of who he was and everything he did, and he was known for his honesty and integrity, his genuine and caring nature, and his devotion to friends and family, and his sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.

For those who would like to remember Sam with a gift, contributions can be made to Kansas City Hospice, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Mo.
