Dynamic Duo: Young doubles team takes first at conference tournament

Nevada came away with a medal in its first West Central Conference tennis tournament, held in Warrensburg.

The number three doubles team of Emma Cheaney and Jaiden Cherry took first at the championships Friday.

In the first round, Cheaney and Cherry played to an 8-8 draw with the team of Herzog/Purvis from Warrensburg, and prevailed in the tiebreaker, 7-5.

In the second round against Pittala/Balint of St. Pius, the Tiger duo squeezed out an 8-6 decision.

Then in the finals, they met Tierney/Tousley of O'Hara and won 8-4.

The girls then had to play singles.

Emma Cheaney, playing at No. 4, downed Anna Hurst (Center) 8-1 but lost to Kaitlyn Pittala of St. Pius 8-4.

At No. 6, Jaiden Cherry dispatched Madison Dills (Clinton) 8-1 but tumbled to Bailey Tousley (O'Hara), 8-3.

Playing at No. 1 doubles, Megan Payne/Ellie Pruitt lost to Dehn/Lesmeister (Clinton) 8-5.

At No. 3 doubles, Sydnie Baker/Courtney Smith were nipped by Sproles/Walter (Smith-Cotton) 8-6.

In singles play, at No. 1, Megan Payne was edged by Allison Burton (Smith-Cotton) 8-6.

At No. 2, Sydnie Baker was shaded by Allie Welch (Center) 8-5.

At No. 3 singles, Ellie Pruitt lost to Sarah Lanning (St. Pius) 8-1.

At No. 5, Courtney Smith was trimmed by Margaret Baldwin (O'Hara) 8-3.

District tournament

The Tigers defeated Harrisonville in district play Monday, 5-4. They now move on to play Warrensburg, today.

Against Harrisonville, Payne, after taking the first set 6-3, dropped the next two sets to opponent Bethany Travis, (6-3) and (6-2).

In No. 2 singles, Baker was turned back by Rebekah Freeman (full score not available).

Pruitt, fell in straight sets to Hannah Eberle, 6-1 and 6-1.

At No. 4 for Nevada, Cheaney toppled Haley Fordyce, 6-2, 6-4.

Smith bounced Laney Peeples 6-1, 6-4.

And finishing out singles play, Cherry went three sets against Audrey Welhoff, winning 6-4, (6-1), and blanking Welhoff in the final set, 6-0.

Doubles play

Nevada's team of Payne and Pruitt defeated Travis/Freeman , 8-5.

Team Baker/Smith was edged by Eberle/Fordyce, 8-6.

And the red hot tandem of Cheaney and Cherry, dominated Peeples/Welhoff, 8-0.
