John Raymond Young, 100, formerly of Sheldon, Mo., passed away on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at Truman Health Care, in Lamar. He was born on May 18, 1914, in Houghton, S.D., to Gideon Isaac Young and Edith Jane (Stevens) Young. He married Dorothy N. Neas on March 7, 1933, in Lamar, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 2006.

John moved with his family to Eldon, Mo., at a young age and a short time later settled in rural Sheldon in Barton County. He worked for the railroad for a time and also worked on oil pipelines in Texas.

John farmed and raised cattle nearly all his life. John loved horses, trail riding and riding with the Shriners in parades. He was a member of the Nevada Elks, Sheldon Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite in Fort Scott, Mirza Temple in Pittsburg, and OES Chapter 53 in Nevada.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Theodore, Edwin and Hawley; and three sisters, Elsie Oldham, Ruth Divine and Edith Divine.

Graveside services with masonic rites will be held at 3 p.m., today, at the Sheldon Cemetery, with the Rev. Jarod Lamb officiating. Friends may call now and until 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
