The Sheldon Panthers boys basketball team rolled to a 63-37 home victory over the Hume Hornets Thursday night, while the Lady Hornets smothered the Lady Panthers, 57-13.

The Sheldon boys displayed their quickness early, getting up and down the court while scoring in bunches to take a 27-7 lead after one quarter of play.

"Our press was good and we flew to the ball really well," Sheldon head coach Tyler Judd said. "That's the style we like to play. If we can just blueprint that first quarter and do it all year, we'll be pretty decent."

Judd said the team's defensive play keyed the first quarter offensive production.

"We did a really nice job of forcing traps, and then forcing passes with a little air on them, and then we went and got it," he said. "I thought our aggressiveness on defense was definitely the key to that."

Hume picked things up to open the second quarter, going on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 27-12.

"They switched their defense a little bit on us," Judd said. "And we didn't execute offensively like we normally do. We're going be better throughout the year on that. We need to execute a little better offensively, and getting all five guys on the same page. And once we do that we're going to be pretty decent."

Judd, whose teams have won four consecutive conference championships, said he is adapting to new personnel this year, after seeing four starters depart from last year's team. Judd said this team is smaller but quicker than past teams he has coached.

"I think our pace of play leads to fatigue for both teams," he said. "But that's part of the game. And even though the pace slows down (like it did in the second quarter) you still have to execute."

Panthers starting shooting guard Micah Swanson, who is the only returning starter from year ago, looked sharp, scoring a game-high 18 points.

"Micah's a good scorer," Judd said. "He did a good job of getting to the rim and hitting his open shots. He's just got a knack for getting the ball to the hole."

Judd said that Swanson's versatility allows him to score in a variety of ways.

"He's pretty consistent for us," he said. "If we can get the ball to him out on the wing... he's pretty tough going to his right of his left."

Sheldon's new starting point guard Jacob McCartney was able to get out in transition and control the tempo of the game.

"Jacob's a table-setter for us," Judd said. "He gets everybody else their points, he's very unselfish, and that's what we like about him. He can score zero points and I'll be happy as long as we get a win and he gets everybody else their shots.

"My favorite line I use with them is, 'You have to give up a good shot to get a great shot.' And we did a good job of that."

Panther post players Cody Hicks and Trenton Heckadon combined for 35 points.

"We got a lot of good points in transition from them," Judd said. "They ran the floor really well. Big guys that run the floor are very tough to defend. And they both do a really good job of posting up before the defense really gets set."

For Hume, forward Austin Sullins finished with 15 points.

Girls game

Despite the big win, Lady Hornets head coach Delayna Thompson sees room for improvement for her team, which improved to 3-0.

"The first half wasn't very good with the turnovers," she said. "The second half we came out and played a much better game. We played calmer, we worked the ball around more and found the open person.

"We made our easy shots in the second half, instead of missing all those layups and all those shots underneath the bucket."

For the Lady Hornets, junior Brhett Mumma finished with a game-high 17 points, while Megan Sutcliffe added 13. Madison Cannon tallied 8 and Brooke Best chipped in with 6 points.
