County accepts bid for trash service

After rejecting bids last week from two companies for trash hauling for Vernon County, the county commission again considered bids Tuesday for that service.

In December, the Vernon County Commission accepted bids from businesses for services such as printing, rock hauling and concrete and decided which companies they would use through 2015, based on those bids.

But the commission made an adjustment to the services they requested in the trash-hauling bids, asking for 12, 4-yard dumpsters to be provided for collecting cardboard.

Only one company returned to the commission with a bid, since the other did not have those extra dumpsters available.

The commission decided to continue to use Waste Corporation of America out of Joplin for their trash-hauling services. WCA's bid of $4,008, to be paid in monthly payments of $334, remained the same as the December bid, but added the 12 dumpsters for cardboard.

They also provide the option of 3-yard dumpsters to be used at special events for $35 each, separate from the total bid. They had previously bid them at $55 each for special events.

WCA representative Ross Rhuems said they hope to have the dumpsters available for cardboard by the end of the week.

Northern commissioner Neal Gerster conducted the hearing of the bid so newly elected presiding commissioner Joe Hardin could see how the process is done.
