May days to remember

Saturday, May 2, 2015

Hi neighbors. May is here and there are many reasons to celebrate. I always like the calendars that list bizarre or unique holidays. Here are a few I found.

May is Date Your Mate month, Foster Care month, National Barbecue month, National Bike month, National Blood Pressure month, National Hamburger month, National Photograph month, National Recommitment month, National Salad month and Older Americans month.

Let's not forget the weekly celebrations. The first week of May celebrates Nurses' Week. We all know a nurse or two we can recognize for their dedication and service.

Week two is Wildflower Week. This might be a good time to visit the state park near Liberal and check out the restored prairie grasses and flowers blooming there. Watch out for the buffalo!

Week three is National Bike Week. I don't know if we will have any bike trekkers passing through Nevada or not; I know they have other years.

Week three is also National Police Week. We all respect and cherish our local police department. A card of thanks or a gift card for a quick lunch would be appreciated I think.

Week four is Emergency Medical Services Week. We don't think about emergency responders until we need them and then they seem (and maybe are) impossible to live without. Take time to tell them that you appreciate what they do.

My favorites on this type of calendar are all of the whacky days they have come up with. May first has several of these. Who would have guessed there was an International Tuba Day? We are more familiar with the first being May Day. Gifts of baskets of flowers are always enjoyed. It is also Loyalty Day, I guess you can interpret that anyway you want. It's also Mother Goose Day, Save the Rhino Day and Space Day.

May the second is Baby Day (everyone loves babies!) and in the same family theme Brothers and Sisters Day. Not to be confused with Siblings Day, which was in April.

The third of May is Lumpy Rug Day and World Press Freedom Day. I don't know much about lumpy rugs, but I know we should all cherish a free press that offers fair and balanced news reporting.

The fourth is busy with Bird Day, National Candied Orange Peel Day, Renewal Day and Star Wars Day. By the way, the next episode of Star Wars comes out this summer sometime I think. Maybe it will come out in theaters on Star Wars Day! Don't forget it is also the meeting date for the Creative Writers group at the Nevada Library meeting room at 10:30 a.m. I hope to see you there!

Most of us recognize May fifth as Cinco de Mayo Day. It is also National Hoagie Day, Oyster Day and most important, National Teachers Day; send a card to the teachers in your children's lives today!

The sixth is Beverage Day, National Tourist Appreciation Day (be kind to the tourists you see in town and help them with directions if needed), National Nurses Day, and (my favorite) No Diet Day. Don't forget School Nurses Day.

May seventh is National Tourism Day (again, tourism brings in money to our local economy).

The eighth is Iris Day, Military Spouses Day, No Socks Day, V-E Day, and World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.

The ninth is International Migratory Bird Day, Lost Sock Memorial Day (remember that no sock day?) and National Train Day (a good day to tell your children about how important trains have been in our history and today.)

The tenth is Clean Up Your Room Day and Mother's Day! Maybe you could clean up her room as well?

The eleventh is Eat What You Want Day and "Twilight Zone" Day! (I loved the old "Twilight Zone" TV series.)

May twelfth is Fatigue Syndrome Day, International Nurses Day and Limerick Day.

The thirteenth is Frog Jumping Day, Leprechaun Day and National Receptionist Day.

The fourteenth is Dance Like a Chicken Day.

The fifteenth is National Bike to Work Day, National Chocolate Chip Day and Police Officer's Memorial Day.

Everyday is a day to celebrate! I'll finish the list next week. For now let's get out and have some fun.
