One day last fall a customer was visiting with Council member Jayne Novak in her office and suggested that it would be nice if there was some way for residents to show their support for the Nevada Police Department. Novak brought that up at a subsequent council meeting and from that was born the idea for signs people could post in their business or home window or even in their car.

During Tuesday night's council meeting Nevada Police Chief W. Graham Burnley showed the council the signs that an anonymous donor paid for. Burnley said the signs would be available during the open house for the new police department and municipal court/council chambers Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Burnley told the council the building will not be secured until after the open house, so it will be the last time the public will have a chance for a complete tour of the building, including the evidence room and other parts of the facility that will be secured.

City manager JD Kehrman said that because of the possibility of rainy weather Friday afternoon, the flag presentation ceremony by the local DAR at 2 p.m., followed by the Nevada/Vernon County Chamber of Commerce may have to be moved into the council chambers. The Nevada High School Soundsational Singers and Crimson Sound are scheduled to perform as well.

In other business the council:

* Voted 5-0, to accept the bid of $23,769 for purchase and installation of two 10-ton and one five-ton HVAC units from Ernsbarger's Heating and Cooling for the Franklin P. Norman City/County Community Center. This will replace all of the HVAC units on the community center, which will save the expense of renting a crane a second time to replace one unit at a later date.

* Voted 5-0, to accept the bid of $5,622.93 for an ABS return activated sludge pump for the wastewater treatment plant from FTC Equipment. FTC is the exclusive municipal supplier for this pump for this area. These pumps run non-stop 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. This pump has been in service for 32,768 hours, since the plant was started in 2011. This pump needs new parts and the repair would cost more than replacing the pump, Kehrman told the council.

* Voted 5-0, to accept the sole bid of $27,240 from the sole bidder, McInroy Contractors LLC for the emergency replacement of a brick manhole that was damaged by vandalism. Shawn Middendorf, Alliance Water Resource local manager told the council the manhole is about 14-feet deep and located on a steep slope, with a large tree nearby, making the project complex and beyond the capability of city crews to replace.

* Voted 5-0, to pass on first reading a special ordinance approving the payment of $5,000 to contract Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers as the main act for Saturday night's entertainment during Bushwhacker Days.

* Voted 5-0, to pass on first reading a special ordinance approving the payment of $10,000 to the Bushwhacker Days Committee to contract David Phelps for Bushwhacker Days Gospel Night main entertainment.

* Voted 0-5 to reject a special ordinance that would have exempted the city of Nevada from participating in the state's back-to-school sales tax holiday, Aug. 7,8 and 9. This will allow Nevada businesses to sell select back-to-school merchandise without collecting city sales tax during that time period.

* Voted 5-0, to pass on second reading a special ordinance approving a change order to the city's contract with C&C Group of Springfield to provide security and access control at the new police department building. It involves two changes; one involves additional hardware on one door in the police department and the other changing card readers to keypads on three doors.

* Voted 5-0, to pass on second reading a special ordinance approving a contract with Quantum Racing LLC for a criterium race on July 11 and 12.
