Offensive woes continue as Tigers get blanked by Fort Scott

FORT SCOTT -- A young Nevada High School baseball team came up against an experienced Fort Scott team here Tuesday afternoon and the difference showed as the home team took a 10-0 victory at Dave Regan Stadium.

Fort Scott has nine seniors, seven of whom normally start. However, all nine were penciled in the starting lineup on the host team's Senior Day.

Senior pitcher Mason Knopp held Nevada (7-13) to just two hits over the six innings played. He didn't walk anyone, hit one batter and struck out five to pick up his fourth win of the season.

Fort Scott (11-4), which is ranked second in Kansas Class 4A-Division I in this week's Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches poll, saw senior catcher Chase Brown enjoy a 2-for-3 day in which he drove in 2 runs. He belted a triple to left to score Jake Bradbury with the game's first run in the first inning and hit a leadoff home run in the third. Seniors Bradbury and Benjamin Labbe also had 2 hits each.

Nevada's only hits were a third-inning single by freshman Braeden Hinton and a fifth-inning single by junior Brett Mitchell. Senior Tanner Handly was the one who was hit by a pitch ---- in the sixth.

Nevada's pitchers, Andy Heathman and Hinton, allowed a total of 11 hits and 4 walks.

Fort Scott won the JV game, scoring 3 runs in the first and third innings and 7 in the second. The game was scheduled for five innings but halted after Nevada's turn in the top of the fourth. Colton Shrewsbury, Payton Bright and Anthony Fox scored Nevada's only runs. Shrewsbury, Fox, Jeff Westerhold and Connor Masters each had one of Nevada's 4 hits.
