Vernon County employees surprised secretary Gail Wysong with a surprise retirement party Tuesday afternoon, with many county and city leaders as well as family and friends from the community attending to show their appreciation for her 15 years of work for the county.

"We're here to celebrate and thank Gail for her many years of service," presiding commissioner Joe Hardin said, saying he spoke not just for the current commissioners and county employees, but also on behalf of past employees who worked with her over the years. "You will be greatly missed, but we wish you well."

Wysong, who has held secretarial positions for a variety of businesses over the past 67 years outside of a two-year retirement, said she came to work for Vernon County to help the previous secretary, who was also handling other responsibilities such as payroll.

"I've been helping out for 15 years," Wysong said. "But I've enjoyed it."

Those in attendance at the party had opportunity to share stories of Wysong while the commissioners presented her the gift of a watch for her years of working in their office.

"She's kept us in line for years," northern commissioner Neal Gerster said.

Wysong said she enjoyed working with those in the office as well as townships and others in the community.

"I'm going to miss everybody," Wysong said. "All my bosses, I couldn't have asked for better ones all the way through. I was blessed. I've had wonderful people to work with."
