Elmer L. Munsterman, 76, Nevada, Mo., after a courageous battle with cancer and with his family present, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin. A visitation and memorial service is planned for Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015 at Ferry Funeral Home, 301 S. Washington, Nevada, Mo., at 2 p.m. with Father Matthew Benjamin officiating.

Following the service, burial will be at Newton Burial Park in Nevada, Mo. Family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Elmer was a life-long resident of the area. He was born in Appleton City, Mo., Dec. 2, 1938, and has been a resident of Nevada for the past 45 years. Following graduation from high school in 1957, his career was a professional over-the-road truck driver. After driving hundreds of thousands of miles over a period of more than 40 years, he was very proud that he had never had a single accident.

He loved to buy and refurbish old cars and trucks to collect or sell, and used to drive a dirt track stock car and enjoyed watching stock car racing. Throughout the year, he and his wife Janice enjoyed taking many trips together and dancing to country and western music.

He was known for his colorful language and was accomplished at telling jokes and stories, which contributed to his classic demeanor on the CB while driving the truck. Any who wish to hear him telling one of these jokes can go to Youtube website at htps://youtube/yzqXqXI_1FO. Four many years he and his brothers and their sons camped out and hunted deer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Munsterman and Erma Munsterman Brownsberger, his brother, Donald Munsterman (and his wife Dorothy Munsterman Schwartz); and his father-in-law, Roy Marple and mother-in-law, Ruby Marple.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Janice Munsterman, Nevada; his son, Troy Munsterman (Janet), Nevada; step-daughter, Leslie Welch (Katherine Conway), Houston, Texas; step-son, Lonnie Welch, Kansas City, Mo.; three brothers, Vincent Munsterman (Sharon), Kansas City, Mo, Larry Munsterman (Sue), Raymore, Mo, and Gary Munsterman (Beverly), Appleton City, Mo.; one sister, Virginia Klein (Dick) Overland Park, Kan.; four grandchildren, Brandon Munsterman, Harrisonville, Mo., and Brooke Munsterman, Nevada, Mo., Regis Welch (Misty), Seneca, Mo., and Ryan Welch, Independence, Mo.; many nieces and nephews.
