Sheldon cross country team opens season today

The Sheldon Panthers cross country team opens its season today at Drexel.
Sheldon is led by senior Hunter Lamphere.
"She is hoping to get all-conference and make it to state for the fourth year in a row," said coach Kimberly Shroyer. "She is a great leader and takes younger (Sheldon) junior high girls on runs with her occasionally to recruit for next year's team."
A new face to the team is junior Nic Pitcock.
"He was new to Sheldon last year," Shroyer said. "He is a very dedicated runner and hard worker who competed at his last school.
"He participated in track for us last spring. I look to see improvement from the track season to cross country as he prefers longer distance running."
The team is rounded out by freshmen runners Matt Bogart and Bryce Lamb, who Shroyer said joined the team for pre-basketball season conditioning.
"They were also in track last year in junior high," Shroyer said of Bogart and Lamb. "Their events were more focused on jumping and short distance.
"We have been working on building stamina, getting several miles in every day. They bring a positive and energetic attitude to practices."
Shroyer said she has been pleased with the progress her team has made leading up to the season.
"It has been a good start to the season having more runners," Shroyer said. "It's easier for them to motivate and challenge one another."
