Betty Jean Shumaker Reis, 83, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, in Lawrence, Kan. She was born on June 23, 1932, in Duquesne, Mo., to George and Maude Shumaker. Betty attended school in Carl Junction where she met Ray Edwin Reis, who became her childhood sweetheart.

Ray and Betty were married on Nov. 20, 1949, in Carl Junction, Mo. They farmed near Carl Junction before moving into town in 1956. In the summer of 1960 Ray and Betty moved to Nevada, Mo., where Ray worked for MODOT as a mechanic. There they raised their three children.

Betty was not only an accomplished cook and housewife, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting as well as being a skillful seamstress, sewing wedding gowns for both of their daughters. After Ray retired, he and Betty traveled extensively throughout the United States, visiting relatives and places of interest, yet always finding time for fishing. Betty and Ray celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 20, 2009, at their home in Nevada.

Betty's sparkling personality and beautiful smile will always be remembered by all who knew her, especially her family.

Betty is survived by her three children, Rebecca Reis Potter, of Eudora, Kan., Patty Gammon and husband, Dennis, of Eldon, Mo., and Larry Reis and wife, Jeanie, of McComb, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jason Douglas Reis and wife, Shawna, and family of Fostoria, Ohio, Crystal Gammon of New Haven, Conn., and Kelly Gammon of Fort Myers, Fla.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Paul Irwin Reis and wife, Lynne, and family of Lake Jackson, Texas; along with several nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Edwin Reis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 28, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada.

Friends may call during visitation from 1 p.m., until the hour of service at the funeral home.
