Lady Tigers run win streak to 10 with sweep of Clinton volleyball tournament

Submitted photo / The Nevada Lady Tigers volleyball team continued its sizzling play on the court, as they swept through the Clinton varsity volleyball tournament over the weekend en route to claiming the tournament championship. The Lady Tigers have won 10 consecutive matches improving to 19-10 overall. In Clinton, senior libero Lexie Overton broke the Nevada High School career digs record. After compiling 98 digs at the tournament, Overton now has 928 for her prep career, as she passed Morgan McNeley's career total of 922. McNeley graduated from NHS in 2014, and now plays volleyball for the Fort Scott Community College (Kan.) Greyhounds. In pool play, Nevada topped both Harrisonville and Odessa in three sets. After advancing into bracket-play, Nevada again defeated Harrisonville, this time needing only two sets 25-17 and 25-19. The Lady Tigers then advanced to the semifinals, knocking off Bolivar in a wild three-set match 22-25, 25-22, and 28-26. In the championship match, the Lady Tigers triumphed over Oak Grove 25-11, 21-25, and 25-23. Junior Megan Hold finished the tournament with 60 digs and 49 kills; Mindy Hendren recorded 33 kills, 15 blocks, and eight aces; setter Ellie Smith hit triple-digits with 153 assists and 10 aces; while outside hitter Margaret Cavener chipped in with 29 kills and a team-leading 14 aces.
