The Nevada City Council held its first of three scheduled budget work sessions Monday evening at the Franklin P. Norman City/County Community Center.

Monday's work session was devoted to the streets, water and sewer. City treasurer Kristie Modlin told the council that she is proposing the city needs to increase the water rates by 3 percent and the sewer rates by 1 percent in 2016. She said that a water customer using 5,000 gallons per month with a current bill of $85.88 would see an increase of $1.82 with the new rates.

Long term the city is planning to replace all of the water meters in town with ones that can be read remotely. With that in mind Modlin told the council she is proposing the city only replace meters that are either dead or nearly dead during 2016, while the city works on a plan to replace all the meters, possibly in 2017.
