Cities are required to pretreat sewage from industrial customers to prevent chemicals that are discharged from damaging the wastewater treatment system. The federal government sets the standards and periodically the regulations are updated, usually making the standards more stringent.

It has been several years since the city's ordinances for this have been updated and the federal regulations have changed, as has the city's wastewater treatment plant.

Tuesday night the Nevada City Council voted 5-0 to hire Horner & Shifrin, of St. Louis, to provide engineering services related to the city's sewer pretreatment program update. The cost of the services are not to exceed $17,000.

In other business the council:

* Voted 5-0, to accept the bid of $5,625 from S Bollinger and Associates LLC, for pour in place playground safety surfacing as included in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Playground Scrap Tire Surface Grant. Although the bid from S Bollinger and Associates LLC is not the lowest bid, their surfacing product, which will be a two inch top coat with the surface composed of 100 percent Missouri scrap tires, better meets the specifications of the grant.

* Voted 5-0, to re-appoint Monte Curtis to a five-year term on the airport board. His term will expire in 2020.

* Voted 5-0, to reappoint Scott Burge to a five-year term on the airport board. His term will expire in 2020.

* Voted 5-0, to reappoint Mike Farran to a five-year term on the airport board. His term will expire in 2020.

* Voted 5-0, to adopt Resolution No. 1445, approving a wholesale/warehouse license for Missouri Eagle LLC at 1404 E. Austin Blvd. This business was previously located outside the city limits. The license will expire July 31, 2016.

* Voted 5-0, to give final approval to a special ordinance accepting the street, water main and sewer main in the Atlantic Estates Subdivision and agreeing to maintain them.

* Voted 5-0, to pass on second reading a general ordinance amending the city's personnel code dealing with sick leave.

* Voted 5-0, to give final approval to special ordinance accepting a proposal from Purple Wave and approving an agreement for it to provide Internet-based auction services to the city.
