The filing period for two seats on the Sheldon School Board begins Dec. 15, at 8 a.m., and ends Jan. 19, at 5 p.m.

The board approved the filing dates for the election during its Nov. 11 meeting.

Board members Jarod Lamb and Paul Sprenkle will see their current terms expire in April of next year.

The board took just over an hour to deliberate and pass a number of items, as well as hear updates from the school system's administrators.

Superintendent Tim Judd said he attended the Celebration of Schools event at MSSU Nov. 3. He reported that he and other area superintendents met with Cottey College officials Nov. 7. Cottey is considering beginning a secondary teacher education program and was seeking input from area superintendents.

That was confirmed at a meeting of the Nevada Lions Club during a presentation by the college president, Dr. Jann Weitzel.

In addition to the secondary teaching program, she noted Cottey was also looking at a middle school component.

Principal Jason Irwin updated board members on the school's attendance figures for October, with 97.14 for elementary and 95.37 for high school.

Year to date, that brings the elementary number to 97.3, compared to last year's 96.68 and the high school number to 95.37, compared to last year's 94.34, good for an overall figure of 96.58 compared to last year's 95.67.

The cross country team finished the season on Halloween.

The junior high basketball girls placed third in the conference tournament at Hume and then took first in the Hume Invitational. The girls finished with a 13- 1 record. The boys' team finished up as well.

High school basketball practice started Nov. 2. At present, Irwin said, Sheldon will have 15 boys and six girls.

With such a sizable boys' team, he said Sheldon woud play as much JV boys as possible this year.

The first game is Dec. 1 against Montrose. He said Sheldon added a game on Monday, Dec. 14 vs. Drexel at 6.

Elementary Principal Carolyn Compton gave board members on an update on student/parent activities. Red Ribbon week was the last week in October. Mrs. Lockard and the Team Spirit group had activities and dress up days each day.

Two Sheldon alumni -- Caitlin Claflin and Morgan Compton -- received their American FFA Degrees at the National FFA Convention Oct. 31.

The University Extension presented the Food Power program to all Sheldon students, pre-K through sixth grade Nov. 20. This is the last year for the program.

The winter concert is Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.

A member from the Central Regional Professional Development Center at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg talked to teachers about classroom discussion.

Compton said the school has looked at the Missouri Assessment Program and End of Course data and reviewed the newly proposed Missouri Learning Standards.

Teachers are working on, or have completed, their second data collection in reading and math for the Collaborative Work Project.

In the consent agenda, the board approved the minutes of the Oct. 14 regular open session, the district-wide evaluation of summer school, and the district-wide evaluation of health services.

The board also accepted the financial report and voted to pay bills. Members also reviewed a balance report and the budget report.
