Luna Winona Garrett, age 99 years and one day, the daughter of Oliver Windford and Lillie Anne (Parker) Beard, was born Saturday, March 3, 1917, in Palestine, Ark., and passed from this life at 5:45 p.m., Friday, March 4, at Community Springs Healthcare Facility, in El Dorado Springs, Mo.

Winona, as she was known, spent her early years in Arkansas where she attended school and at the age of 16 was united in marriage to Carlton Daniel Garrett. Together the couple became the parents of five children. In the early 1950s, the family moved to Missouri where they owned and operated a sawmill near the Horton bottoms. They lived in Schell City for a couple of years before moving to California where Mr. Carlton sought another employment path. In 1963, they moved back to Schell City making this area their home for the rest of their lives.

Winona worked right along beside Mr. Carlton in the sawmill and also spent several years as a seamstress for the WPA. When time allowed she enjoyed quilting, gardening, canning the bounty of the growing season, and especially loved flowers and tending them. She kept an immaculate yard, mowing and caring for her lawn until she was nearly 90.

Of special note was her love to dance -- always wanting to lead, never follow. She cherished time spent with family and always loved family get-togethers and dinners. She was baptized at an early age and then again at the Methodist Church in Palestine, Ark. After moving permanently to Schell City, she attended the Schell City Christian Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Bailey of Schell City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Wayne, Chris, Tim, Donna, Gary, and Rachael; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Murrey Beard of Wright City, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews, along with other extended family members. Winona was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Geraldine; three grandchildren, Tricia, Larry, and Donnie; four children, Daniel, Gary, and Larry Garrett, and Alice Lucille Huston; and her beloved husband, Carlton Daniel Garrett, who passed away in 1974.
