Lady Tigers place fifth at Pittsburg tourney

For the first time this season the Nevada Lady Tigers volleyball team suffered defeat. After opening its 2016 slate 8-0, the Lady Tigers went 2-3 at Saturday's Pittsburg (Kan.) Volleyball Tournament.

Nevada (10-3 overall) opened with a three-set loss to Pittsburg 25-22, (25-10), and (25-13). In its second match, the Lady Tigers were again pushed to three sets, as they were edged by Baxter Springs (Kan.) (25-20), 25-23, and (25-18).

In their third match, Nevada fell to Carthage in two sets 25-12, 25-21.

In its fourth match of the day, Nevada bounced back with a three-set victory over Fort Scott (Kan.) High School. After dropping the first set 25-22, the Lady Tigers prevailed in sets two and three 25-23 and 25-21.

In the fifth-place game, Nevada avenged its earlier loss to Baxter Springs, dispatching the Lady Lions in two sets 25-23, 25-16.

For the tournament, Nevada senior Megan Hold finished with 50 kills, 35 digs, and six aces. Ellie Smith dished out 78 assists to go along with 30 kills.
