"A lot of people don't realize it but absentee voting for the November general election begins on Tuesday, September 27," said Mike Buehler, Vernon County clerk.

That's today!

Those voting between today and Nov. 8 will receive a ballot with two sides. The top will include the offices of United States President, vice-president, senator and representative as well as the state offices of governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state treasurer, attorney general, state senator, state representative, circuit judge, either northern or southern district county commissioner, sheriff, assessor, collector-treasurer, public administrator and coroner.

The other side of the ballot will contain various issues. All ballots will contain five constitutional amendments -- numbered one, two, three, four and six (there is no five) -- as well as Proposition A and whether a Missouri Supreme Court Judge shall be retained.

Another article in today's edition of the Daily Mail begins a closer look at the ballot issues.

Those living within the El Dorado Springs R-2 School District will be asked to vote on a $5.6 million bond issue while those living in Bronaugh will be asked to authorize their city not to hold an election in the event that the number of candidates for city alderman does not exceed the number of open positions.

"Because we had that special situation with Judge Bickel's retirement being after the deadline for the August primary election, that meant we had to use a special procedure and the deadline for that was not till Sept. 16," said Buehler. "That didn't give us much time to get the ballot to our printer so we could have ballots once absentee voting began. But one way or another, on Sept. 27, we'll be ready."

To request an absentee ballot or for further information, contact the county clerk's office at 417-448-2500 or stop in the clerk's office on the second floor between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or contact the office online at clerk@vernoncountymo.org. Extended weekday and Saturday hours will be announced as the Nov. 8 general election draws near.
