Katherine Lenore Robertson Howard Young

Katherine Lenore Robertson Howard Young, age 84, died Sept. 29, 2016 at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada.

Katherine was born in a small farmhouse three miles east of Richards, Missouri, on August 26, 1932. Her parents were The Reverend Jeter Arthur Robertson, Sr. and Mary Katherine (Harmon) Robertson. When she was six, her family moved to Nevada, Missouri, and she attended first grade at Benton Elementary School. The next five years were spent in Warrensburg, Missouri. After that, she lived in New York and attended Public School Number 7. Returning to Nevada after a year, she attended Nevada High School, graduating in 1949. She graduated from Cottey College in 1951. She received her B.S. in Education from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, Missouri in 1953. Later, she received her Master's in Education from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas in 1980.

Katherine married George Melbourne Howard on June 6, 1953, and to this union, two daughters were born. He preceded her in death in 1978. She married Harold J. Young in 1981 and he preceded her in death in 2001.

She is survived by her daughters, Teresa Ann Howard Wolfe and husband Steven, and Katherine Lynn Howard and friend Wesley Campbell. Two grandchildren, Zachary Howard Wolfe and wife Courtney, and Stephanie Alicia Hackman and husband Kenneth. Five great-grandchildren also survive, as well as her brother, Robert Millard Robertson and his wife Maxine, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, J. Arthur Robertson, Jr. and her parents. She is survived by many, many friends and hundreds of "favorite students."

Katherine loved her organizations and she belonged to several: PEO Chapter KK, AAUW, Alpha Delta Kappa Retired Teachers, and Thalias MFWC. She had recently been honored for sixty years as a member of the various chapters of the Nevada Beta Sigma Phi organization. At the 2016 Cottey College Founder's Day, she received special alumnae recognition. Katherine also enjoyed traveling and had visited the Netherlands, Ireland, Japan, China, India, and Africa, along with almost all fifty states. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church, Master Gardeners, Lunch Bunch, and Nevada Country Club.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 3, 2016 at Ferry Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Those who wish may contribute in Katherine's memory to the Nevada High School Scholarship Fund in care of the Nevada R-5 Foundation.
