Council set date to renew street sales tax

The Nevada City Council voted 4-0, with Ryan Watts excused, to give preliminary approval to holding an election on April 4, 2017, to renew the city's one-half percent transportation sales tax for another five years during its Tuesday night meeting. The tax brings in around $700,000 each year, of which, at least $500,000 must be spent on new street construction.

"We can use some of the money from this tax for street repairs, as long as we spend $500,000 on new construction," City Manager JD Kehrman, said in response to a question from Nevada Mayor Brian Leonard.

The tax was initially approved by voters in 1997 and during the almost 20 years it has been effect, the city has used the money from this tax to pay for resurfacing, construction, reconstruction, curb and guttering of 498 blocks, with an average of 25 blocks per year.

In other business the council:

* Voted 4-0, to reappoint Carol Miller to a second term on the Nevada Park Board. Her term will expire in June 2019.

* Voted 4-0, to pass on first reading a bill accepting the bid of $67,424, with a $10,000 contingency, from D&M Restoration Inc., of Kansas City, Mo., for repairs and renovation of the acid room at the water treatment plant.

*Voted 4-0, to pass on first reading a bill approving $6,000 in sewer surcharges and fines imposed in NF Protein LLC, 3000 Industrial Parkway. The fines are for six violations "listed individually and conjointly constitute a disregard of the pretreatment requirements of the municipality and justify six administrative fines of $1,000 for each of the six violations are recommended to the council."

Kehrman told the council that NF Protein LLC has not discharged anything more into the city's sewers.

* Voted 4-0, to adopt Resolution No. 1437 accepting the donation of a bench, fountain and a tree from the Nevada Lions Club, as recommended by the Nevada Park Board.

* Voted 4-0, to adopt Resolution No. 1474, approving an application from Delaney Vineyard & Winery for a license to sell light wines containing not en excess of 14 percent alcohol by weight, by the drink at retail for consumption on the premises of 1200 S. Main Street.

* Voted 4-0, to give final approval to a special ordinance changing the zoning on property at 804 E. Wooter St., from R-1, single family residential, to M-2, heavy industrial district at the request of property owner Dick Shorten. Shorten wants to construct additional storage units, as he has on adjoining property. The planning commission voted unanimously to send a positive recommendation to the city council on the zoning change.
