Ross Edward Lawrence Sr.

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

Ross Edward Lawrence Sr., 83, died peacefully at his home on March 18. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Judith A. Lawrence; his children Ross E. Lawrence Jr., Jenene Howland (Brad), Kathy Bascom, Colleen Thomas (Rusty), Angela Lawrence; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Lawrence (Irene), Audrey Gilliam (Jim); and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many beloved animals and pets.

Born in Denton, Kan., on April 13, 1933, the son of Grace D. and Charles R. Lawrence, he was raised in Kansas City and Detroit. In 1956, he and Judy moved to Battle Creek, Mich., and later to Lenexa, Kan. His last 33 years were spent on his beloved farm in Milo.

Ross spent four years in service to the United States Air Force, followed by 29 years at AT&T, where he started at an entry level position and through hard work, dedication and a desire to provide for his family became a computer engineer. Even though he delayed finishing high school until completing his military service, he made sure that his children had the opportunity to pursue college degrees, putting his dreams on hold until his children grew into adults.

In addition to his family, Ross's true passion was his farm and caring for his animals. He was never as happy as he was when he was feeding animals and walking his property. He taught many to love and respect the outdoors. In his youth, he enjoyed playing hockey, softball, golf and basketball. In his later years he enjoyed painting the landscapes that he loved to view. Ross was longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Nevada.

Ross was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James; his sister Mary; and daughter-in law Debbie.

Services will be held Wednesday, March 22, at 10 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 500 N. Olive St., Nevada, MO 64772. Family request donations be made to First Presbyterian Church Youth Mission Fund or Community Outreach, 229 N Cedar, Nevada, MO 64772-2309
