The Cottey Comets returned to Vanek Family Field Wednesday afternoon as they hosted a twinbill with visiting Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Cottey (6-10) edged KCKCC 6-5 in the opener, before dropping the nightcap 10-2.

In the opener, the Comets came out hot as they plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Cottey's first run of the contest was courtesy of a Jacqueline Nix double, scoring Hannah Bridges. The Comets second run came via Patri Eckert's squeeze bunt, plating Bre Kelley as Cottey led 2-0.

The visitors struck back with a second inning solo home run to trim the Comets lead to a run, followed by a pair of Comet runs in the bottom half of the frame as Izzy Milligan notched an RBI, handing Cottey a 4-1 advantage through two innings of play.

Kansas City Kansas Community College continued to chip away at its deficit, bringing two runners around to score in the third, as they trailed 4-3. KCKCC, however, was unable to slow Cottey offensively, allowing two Comets to cross home plate, upping its lead to 6-3.

Kansas City again had an answer in the fifth, getting to starting pitcher Melissa Jervis for two runs as KCKCC found itself down 6-5.

Jervis was able to shut down KCK's bats over the final two frames, as Cottey held on for the victory.

"We came through with stellar defense to secure the win," Cottey assistant coach Meg Brewer said.

Notable stats for the Comets included Nix, going 2-for-3 at the dish with a pair of RBIs. Kelley was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, while Eckert went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Other Comet RBIs came from Milligan and Michala Coffman, while Jervis earned the win in the circle.

In the nightcap, Cottey fell behind early, with its only runs coning in the fifth and final inning, as KCK emerged with a 10-2 victory.

The highlight of the contest for Cottey was Jessica Manderino's fifth inning solo blast, while Delia Lynch recorded a fifth inning RBI-single. Also collecting hits for Cottey, were Bridges and Lily Brockus.

Coffman was tabbed as the game two starter, and was saddled with the loss.
