Kane and Jacob Allison were presented a certificate of appreciation by the City of Walker on Thursday evening for their recent volunteer work painting over graffiti on the gazebo and shelter house in the city park.

“Not only did they cover up the bad words, they painted the whole thing. It’s also refreshing — dad was with them showing them how to do things right…” Alderman Phil Thompson said during the presentation.

The project began one day when Kane, 11, was at the park with his mother.

Kane said, “Me and my mom came over here to hang out at the park … I saw all the nasty words and I told my mom about them … I asked her if I could go see if the city [hall] was open … and it was open so I knocked on the door and volunteered to do it.”

Alderman Phil Thompson was at city hall that day and suggested Kane get permission from the board of alderman who unanimously approved.

Kane’s brother Jacob, 12, and his father Kenneth Allison also helped paint.

Kenneth Allison, Kane and Jacob’s father said, “I think it’s great. I think it’s important to instill a sense of worth in the community that they’re not just entitled to everything … that they earn stuff … and if they want to keep things nice … they have to show that they’re willing to help out.”

“We’ll definitely call on them again,” Thompson said.

There is more painting that needs to be done in the park — railing, benches, picnic tables.

“It wouldn’t hurt to freshen them up,” Alderman Mike Newman said.

At the most recent board of alderman meeting, there has been discussion of holding a work day in the park and recruiting volunteers to help get some of those small projects completed.
