Tiger grapplers secure third-place at Grandview Dual Tournament

The Nevada Tiger wrestling team rose to the occasion Saturday, knocking off four schools en route to a third-place finish at the Grandview High School Dual Tournament. In pool play, the Tigers toppled Springfield-Glendale, 50-36, and followed with a second round victory over host Grandview, 42-36. The Tigers then wrapped pool play with a decisive 42-21 defeat of West Central Conference foe, Kansas City Center.

After advancing to bracket-play, Nevada suffered its lone loss of the day, falling to the Cameron Dragons, 57-19. Nevada then bounced back in a major way, beating Raymore-Peculiar High School, 42-30, in the thirdplace match. Nevada’s highlights included — Caleb Longobardi’s perfect day, as the 220-pound senior finished 5-0, while teammate Adam Guenther, competing at 182 pounds, also notched a 5-0 record. In addition, Nevada junior Jaren Powrie won all three of his matches in the 145-pound weight division.

Rooster quadrangular

Prior to the weekend tournament, the Tiger grapplers were in action two days earlier at the Pleasant Hill Rooster quadrangular. Nevada collected one victory, besting Central Academy of Excellence (K.C.), 66-12. Nevada, however, was defeated by the Dragons of Cameron, 105-6, and also fell to host Pleasant Hill, 72-12.

The Tigers are slated to host their first home match of the season, today at Nevada Middle School. The Tigers welcome in Carl Junction, Diamond, and Columbus (Kan.), with the first match set for 5 p.m. Festivities also include Senior Night recognition, and a Wall of Fame Induction ceremony, set for 4 p.m. at Nevada High School.
