James Eldon Berten

James Eldon Berten, 68, formerly of Nevada, passed away on Feb. 21, at Appleridge Care Center in Waverly, Mo., following a lengthy illness.

James was born Aug. 2, 1949, in Maysville, Mo., to Clyde Wesley and Shirley Faye (Dennis) Berten, Jr. Throughout his life, James worked in construction as a heavy equipment operator building many bridges. For the past 50 years, he has lived mostly in the Nevada area. James liked to fish, play pool and spend time with his family.

Survivors include four sons, James “Rick” Berten, Nevada, Frank Berten, Blue Springs, Mo., Jimmy Joe Berten, Nevada, and David Berten (Brenda), Nevada; two daughters, Tammy Johnson, Independence, Mo., and Cindy Chastain (Dean), Independence, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brothers, Bob Berten, Clarksdale, Mo., John Berten, El Dorado Springs, Mike Berten, Chickasha, Okla., Doug Berten, El Dorado Springs; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and special friends.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. The family will receive friends from noon until service time at the funeral home.
