With six available players for the majority of the season, and only five to close out the year, Hume Hornets head coach Justin Wehar was pleased with his club’s grit and determination.

Hume (1-21) concluded its season Monday, Feb. 19 with a 59-41 loss to the top-seeded Drexel Bobcats in the opening round of the Class 1 District 6 basketball tournament.

After being outscored 23-9 in the first quarter, the Hornets bounced back, playing Drexel nearly even the rest of the way. From the second quarter on, the No. 8 seed Hornets were outscored by just four points, 36-32.

“Even though the season came to a close, I thought we played very well against a good Drexel team and, ended the season on a positive note,” said Wehar.

Added Wehar: “Not always can you determine the success of a season based solely on wins and losses. I believe from November to February the boys have shown tremendous improvement — which to me, proves a successful season.”

Wehar added that his squad not only improved individually, but also came together as a team.

“This speaks of their drive and work-ethic that they have brought to the court all season,” noted Wehar. “This season was a great learning experience for a team of mostly underclassmen. I am very proud of how the boys acted on and off the court throughout entire season. They played every game clear to the end, no matter how much the deck was stacked against them — and no matter what the score was.”

Against Drexel, sophomore forward Jonathan Kellhoffer paced Hume with a team-high 14 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Kuper Moore joined his teammate in double-figure scoring with 10 points, while Harrison Wepener added eight points and eight rebounds.

Note: Hume hosted the Class 1 District 6 boys and girls basketball tournaments
