Like the seventh-grade squad, the Nevada Middle School eighth-grade hoopsters were also victorious in their season opener — edging El Dorado Springs 42-37 Thursday night in El Do.

Nevada led 14-13 after one quarter of play, and trailed 21-19 at the break. A 14-7 third quarter run put Nevada in front 33-28, as the Lady Tigers were able to hold on for the eventual five-point victory. For Nevada, Maddy Majors dropped in a game-high 15 points, while Abbey Heathman and Franki Fine chipped in eight points apiece.

“This group of girls are a selfless team,” said Nevada head coach Lori Thorp. “Defensively, we were solid for our first game, and still have room for improvement. Maddy did a great job guarding (their top player). We asked her to guard a strong player, and she rose to the occasion.”
