Big Serve: Community-wide volunteer effort a big success

Tuesday, April 30, 2019

The Vernon County Big Serve brought together volunteers throughout the area over the weekend for a spring clean-up, wrapping up a successful second year of the event. Organizer Lynda Jones said an estimated 175 volunteers completed 35 projects; including painting, house cleaning, removing debris, minor home repair and painting.

The Big Serve is billed as “a weekend in which the people of Vernon County help their neighbors.” It is an opportunity for participants to give what they can and receive what they need. Individuals work together to complete projects for those who are unable, for whatever reason, to do the projects themselves.

One Nevada resident has been dealing with a brush pile in her driveway that she had no way to remove. “This is such a nice project and such a big help. I don’t have any way to do this type of stuff anymore.”

Another resident was thankful for the crew that picked up sticks and cleaned brush from her yard. “I just had triple bypass surgery and tried to do it myself, but just can’t yet. I so appreciate what they are doing for me.”

The group tries to do all requested projects, but those requiring more money depend on the availability of funds. Understanding that sometimes people have difficulty accepting assistance, Jones says they do offer an opportunity to give back. “It certainly isn’t required though.”

The Fall Big Serve event is set for September 28 and 29. “I’ve decided to just make it the fourth weekend in April and the fourth weekend in September. This way, volunteers will be able to plan around those days, knowing well in advance. Some of these volunteers just have a servant’s heart, and they just love to do this.”

Jones sends out a hearty thank you to everyone who volunteered their time or donated to make this spring’s event a success. Nine groups participated this spring: Catholic Church, Presbyterian Church, United Methodist Church, First Christian Church, Church of Latter Day Saints, Nevada Daily Mail, Cottey College, LifeWalk Church and First Baptist Green Room Youth.
